My Fortune

June 21, 2014 8:03 pm

The cookie placed in front me
cracks open an aphorism of my life.
Shedding light on the unknown
fixating the spotlight on my scars.
The light burns a black hole
into the delicate paper,
which holds the key to my future.
The blazing heat spreads
leaving behind the ashes
of what used to be my life.

Ashes to ashes.
Dust to dust.
These are the remains
that bear my trust.
But how can I find my fortune
underneath the debris?
I cannot be the person
I want to be.

Let me sacrifice my soul
and become one with my heart.
I reach for the keenest stick
amongst the pile
and cut my fortune into
my precious skin
watching the ruby-red blood
fall reluctantly down my left arm
dripping nonchalantly from my fingertips
touching the Earth.

My pain is released
into the surrounding kingdom
formed around me
to protect me from evil.
I have sacrificed my life
to offer it to
God above.
The wound on my arm marks my fortune
leaving the scar behind to remind me
I am fortunate to be alive.

  1. I’ve read that you don’t enjoy writing unless you have an emotional reason…it’s a shame, you write beautifully. Love your talents…
